Cathy was asked to put together a gift list

as a style maker to be featured in a famous blog:

GIFTS FOR GETTING:

FANTASY: 1976 Citroen 2CV convertible: I have been in love with this car since I first saw one as a little girl. How could anyone not have a great day driving around in that? And the awning stripe convertible top might just be the most fun thing I've ever seen.

REALITY: Retrovelo Karla 3 speed: A close second for a stylish way to zip around town! I'd have to find orange awning stripe panniers for the rack though!

FANTASY: Men's vintage Rolex tank: I've always preferred men's watches since my hands aren't exactly what one would call "dainty" and women's watches look like - well, a dainty watch on a very "un-dainty" wrist. I absolutely love the circussy playfulness of the arabic numerals. If I ever come across this watch in real life, I can't be held responsible for what I might do...

REALITY: Newgate Strand alarm clock: I really like the clean retro lines of this clock and the glow-in-the-dark hands are a plus on those nights when I'm lying awake wondering where I can find one of those watches...

FANTASY: Pixie Dust Lap Blanket via Purl Soho: This textural hand knit throw was highlighted on Purl Soho's website earlier this month and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. I love a good nap, and I'm certain this blanket and I would become fast friends.

REALITY: Jade Saphire Handspun Cashmere: This cashmere yarn inspires me to knit a pair of warm chunky mittens and at least give my hands the joy of knowing what it would be like to curl up in that Pixie Dust blanket.

GIFTS FOR GIVING:

Birch Log Place Cards by ACME Party Box Company : I have a real fondness for birch trees and these mini logs cut from naturally fallen branches fulfill all of my aesthetic and environmental gift-giving dreams! An especially lovely hostess gift, they include sandpaper allowing one to quickly sand off the names of vacated guests and personalize them for the next party. Whenever we sell them in the store I'm a little sad to see each one go... they have such character and between party duties are delightful to have around as decor.

Tassle Scarf by Matta: Matta has been around for a while, but I don't think their light-as-a-feather tassel scarves could ever possibly go out of style. Their range of colors is so extensive and beautiful it would be impossible not to please everyone.

Animal Egg Cups by Quail: This summer our family fell in love with an incredible line of animal egg cups (lions, puffins, badgers and more!). There's one to suit every personality imaginable, and only an egg head wouldn't be over the moon for their whimsical design! The perfect gift for everyone from baby to gramps - after all, who doesn't love a nice egg for brekky?

Box of Hope

Such a simple concept.

Fill a shoe box with a toy, a hygiene item, a pen, a pad of paper and be a little more creative with something else.

Wrap the box in wrapping paper and give to a child in need.

We did this at the company and made 410 boxes with people making the boxes themselves and or donating money which we then took and bought 1,200 items to fill the boxes with.

For babys, boy/girl 2-10 years old, and boy/girl 10 years and older.

These boxes of hope will go to needy children in Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, India and Philippines.

Such a simply concept yet will make a lot of kids happy.

Total of about 12,000 boxes made this year.

Shinji in Concierge Magazine

Shinji was asked to model for an article about painful China massages in Hong Kong. He suggested I go.

The guy balanced his whole body on his elbow upside down on my back, then had a car placed on him then a crane the pressed down on the car then God's foot came out of the sky and stepped on the crane.

Once the massage was over, they had me sit down with my shirt off and the nurse held a red hot griddle about 1 inch from my skin and made cheese toast of me.

Nice way to spend an afternoon.

50th Anniversary party, what a night....

The Sun

From the beginning of time, this star has been there.

Nowhere in this universe as we know it can we be far from its illumination. In the coldest of winter evenings, it lights up the stars and the moon. In the hottest of days it permeates us and lights the way…

Very much is this like the love of my Aunt and Uncle.

Their love was there for me in my beginning. And no matter how far I travel and at what speed, I am surrounded by this majestic force of nature around which I orbit effortlessly and eternally. It has been one of the most powerful sources of life I have ever known. And much like when one stares into the sun, I see the sun’s image on all things. When I turn away from looking at your life and love for your entire family and friends, I see your radiant image imprinted on everything.

like the Japanese Haiku

“breaking through darkness
a single ray of sunshine
illuminating”

My God how I have loved you both,

Love,

Michael P.

Cambodia

I was in Cambodia celebrating a friend's 50th birthday. While everyone slept in, I had arranged for the Children's Surgical Hospital to pick me up and take me to see their clinic.

I was put in touch with them by a lady I met who runs the Chairman's Fund at CLSA. She used to work with them. They basically are a clinic that performs surgery on children who cannot afford to go to a hospital.

I was given a tour by a retired Australian Xray technician. He retired in 1980 and the volunteer position was for people who had experience in XRAY machines from 1980 because that is the what the hospital had...in a wood closet...no lead doors or walls..

I saw people who had pins coming out of their legs resting on metal cots with thin cushions and their relatives slept on the floor under the cots to care for them.

Acid burn victims. Broken bones... lots of painful looking recovery.

I asked where they thought they needed the most help and Lindsay, the Australian, recommended scholarships for the staff who want to be certified in nursing or be proper XRAY technicians.

The guy who drove me, Meng Long was head of their I.T. and after talking to him, I was able to contact Ken at Microsoft about donating server software to bring both the hospital and the Acid Survivor Center online so that everyone's records could be accessible form other locations.

We then took a short drive to the Acid Burn Survivors house. It is in the country side as it is also like a village where they farm for their own produce. A few houses were built in the back on stilts where the people are on their family who care for them.

I walked into the first floor and there were several acid burn survivors. This is a tragic reality that people throw acid on others when in a dispute. Unfortunately the women usually are caring their children when in happens and the children become collateral damage.

Many were receiving treatment. Many where crocheting BABS (Bags of Acid Burn Survivors) which they sell for $4.00. http://www.cambodianacidsurvivorscharity.org/babs.html

Upstairs there were people sewing pressure garments to be worn while the tissue heals. They also need the work as there is a stigma with being an acid burn victim as they are rather distressing to see.

I met with the Doctor who also looks after their court cases to press charges against their perpetrators and also the Social Worker who tries to help with the psychological damage.

I spoke with the Project Manager Ziad, a young Australian guy who runs the place and talked about ways to help them raise funds as well as how to help in general.

There are so many ways.

Remembering Bill Sullivan on April 26th

Warrior Memories: Del Norte Warrior great Bill Sullivan – part one
Written by Dick Trone January 02, 2009 09:31 am

Whenever a discussion about former Warrior greats occurs, the name Bill Sullivan always comes up.
Bill was a 1958 graduate that played his football and basketball for coach Tex Gatlin and baseball for coach Wally Maciel.

During his junior and senior years Bill was the Warrior quarterback, winning all league and white star honors both years. He was a true triple threat back as a great passer, a great runner, and a great kicker.

One of his exploits as a punter is still talked about. Del Norte was playing Fortuna on the old Pykes Field where the goal pasts were close to what is now the rec gym. Late in the game, with the Warriors leading by a small margin, Del Norte had the ball on forth down on the Fortuna 25-yard line.

Coach Gatlin ordered Bill to punt. The team lined up in punt formation and everybody was sure some kind of trick play was coming because nobody punts from the 25. Bill followed orders and boomed one onto the roof of the gym for a net gain of 15 yards after the ball game out to the 20 yard liner.

Coach Gatlin later said this great strategy saved the game since Fortuna drove to the four-yard line when time ran out.

With Bill leading the way Del Norte came within six inches of winning the league championship when on forth and goal the ball was marked down at the 6 inch line on what would have been the winning score.

Bill not only received league honors during his senior year, but also was given All-State recognition. Bill received a full ride football scholarship to Oregon State University to play for the Oregon State Beavers. At Oregon State, Bill was the backup quarterback to Terry Baker, who was the Heisman Trophy winner in their senior year. Because of Bill’s natural athletic ability, the Beavers took advantage of those skills and used him quite a bit as a defensive back.

In next week’s column I will discuss what he did in basketball and baseball and some of the many things he did for the youth of our community.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.

Happy Easter Everyone!

From Aunt Sandy

Hi Everyone,
Loved, loved, loved the darling pictures of Molly and Jack.  I guess my favority one is the two of them hand in hand walking down the fence line in our backyard to see the Bennett goats.  We had so much fun during the Joe Sullivan family visit.    Molly's 4th birthday party (princess theme) tutus, tights, and mac & cheese in heart shaped dishes,  homemade & decorated cupcakes with Swiss meringue buttercrean frosting, chocolate ice cream sundaes, lots of candy and crafts.  Jack's first pbj (peanut butter & jelly) sandwich which he loved and wore with pride.   At Thanksgiving, Michael and Blake joined us and when I measured Blake he had grown 3 inches since last year mark on the growth chart.  Owen was disappointed that he wasn't as tall as Blake yet.

Keep posting pictures,  I so enjoy them.

Love to all,
Aunt Sandy

P.S.  Sent out the Save the Date cards today for our 50th Wedding Anniversary.   How time flies!

A little change makes a big difference....

We have a charity walk tomorrow. We went around the trading floor with a water cooler bottle! Some traders were fantastic giving thousands of dollars out of their pockets.

Today is the day to get the coins and cash out of the bottle (not the best idea) I took my tools to the office and had to use a puncture thing to make a space for my hand to fit through!

So as I reach into this jagged hole I am cutting the shit out of my hand and wrist and now bleeding but don't realize it.

$25,000 in coins and money! We raised almost $50,000 hkd in all

So I take my roller suit case and roll the coins to HSBC . They send me to nine different places in the building (bleeding with suitcase) and when I get to the basement where the deaf mute guy works who puts coins in a machine to count, they tell me they are closed! I yelled and they called the guards! I refused to leave and pulled out my water bottle  weighing about 50lbs and the British couple in front of me have put theirs in bags by denominations!?!? I have Levi buttons, Indian, Singaporean and Japanese coins in there and just wanted to deposit in a magic thing that counts them!!!

I have to take the bottle and them separate into bowls and the lovely couple ahead of me stay and help after I accidentally dumped half on the floor. So there I am hungover, bleeding on my only day off with two strangers sorting hong kong coins which I have never even seen before cuz I usually throw at one of the angry drivers!!
